Rooms

Broken Causeway

A highway that walks straight into the sea. Waves slap the guardrails, and far ahead a skyline stands in the water like a forest of grey trees.

The Floodgate

A great steel lock gate holds back the tide, groaning with every wave. Someone has painted TIDEWELL → on it in tar.

Tidewell

A town built on the roof of a parking garage, lashed together with rope bridges and salvage. Cook fires smoke under tarps, a cutting of the Mother Root grows in a rain barrel, and everyone here walks with their knees bent for the swell.

Floating Market

Rafts and boats tied together into a market that rises and falls with the tide. Traders shout prices over the gulls.

Tidewell Docks

Rotting piers where Tidewell's divers set out each morning. Something long and dark moves under the boats.

The Shallows

Waist-deep water over a sunken avenue. Traffic lights stick out of the waves, still blinking amber after three hundred years.

Concrete Reef

Coral has grown over a bus stop, a car, a whole street corner. Bright fish dart through windows. Songs drift up from below.

The Ferry Wreck

A ferry lies on its side across the avenue, half sunk, its hull a cave of rust. Divers say the crew never left.

Fifth Avenue Canal

What was once the grandest avenue in the city is now a canal between glass cliffs. Rowboats drift past shop signs.

Garden Rooftops

A chain of rooftop gardens, wild now, linked by planks. Gulls the size of dogs nest in the air conditioners.

The Great Billboard

A billboard four stories tall, its smiling face peeling away in strips. Something pale clings to the back of it, whispering slogans.

Broadcast Antenna

The city's broadcast tower, still standing, still humming. Relays blink at the top. Things with too many legs climb its lattice.

Glass Skybridge

A glass corridor between two towers, forty floors above the water. Half the panes are gone. The wind sings through the gaps.

Rope Bridges

A web of rope bridges strung between drowned office blocks. Every one of them sways. Some of them have been cut.

Sunken Ferry Line

A ferry terminal, flooded to the ticket windows. Drowned ferrymen still punch tickets for passengers who never come.

Sunken Plaza

A grand plaza under ten feet of clear water. You walk the rim of a fountain. Statues of old-world heroes stare up from the bottom.

Flooded Mall

A shopping mall with the sea up to the second floor. Mannequins float in the food court. Something has been rearranging them.

The Grand Atrium

The mall's glass dome has become a greenhouse over black water. On an island of escalators, the Matron holds court among her mannequins.

Meridian Tower Roof

The tallest roof in the city. Far to the east, a mountain of rusted machinery rises from the sea, smoking. Wind turbines turn on its slopes.

Archive Steps

Marble steps lead down into the sea and under the doors of the city archive. A diving bell hangs from a crane, ready.

Sunken Archive: Reading Hall

A reading hall under the sea, dry inside a bubble of ancient air. Pages drift like snow. Lights move between the shelves.

Sunken Archive: The Stacks

Shelves forty feet tall, holding everything the old world wrote down. Ink runs from the books and pools on the floor, and the pools move.

Sunken Archive: The Vault

A vault of sealed records. At its center the Archivist sits at a desk of coral, writing, forever, in a book with no last page.
